This report on the herbal tea, Essiac, covers some of its background. To get more details about Essiac or to try it for yourself, follow the BLUE hyperlinks.

Essiac

One of the alternative treatments for cancer that has been in use for the longest time is Essiac, an herbal tea that was developed in the 1920s, although it may have been in use for hundreds of years. That is because it is believed that the formula for Essiac was revealed by an old Native Indian healer.

The person who named Essiac was a Registered Nurse in Canada, Rene Caisse. The name Essiac is Caisse spelled backwards. According to Ms. Caisse, she was told about the formula by a woman who claimed it cured her breast cancer. Furthermore, she told Caisse that she was given the formula by an elderly Ojibwa medicine man in Northern Ontario.

Whatever the source for the formula may have been, it utilizes four herbs to produce an herbal tea. Caisse said she used the tea to cure her aunt of cancer. After this success, her aunt’s physician, Dr. R. O. Fisher of Toronto, asked Caisse to treat some of his other patients with the herbal formula, and, Caisse related, other medical doctors “were impressed with the results.”

Caisse was encouraged to open up a cancer treatment clinic in Bracebridge, Ontario, where she treated thousands of patients with the formula she named Essiac. Although the clinic was closed in 1942, Essiac continues to be available as an herbal dietary supplement. It has been reported that Dr. Charles Brusch, who was President John F. Kennedy’s physician, used Essiac successfully on his own cancer.

Essiac Tea Formula

There is now more than one Essiac Tea formula used to make this alternative medicine treatment. The formula said to be the original one, developed by the Canadian nurse Rene Caisse, after whom Essiac is named, is based on a recipe said to have come from an old Ojibwa medicine man. She used Essiac to treat the patients in her Cancer Clinic in Bracebridge, Ontario.

This original Essiac formula was made with: Slippery Elm inner bark, Burdock root, Sheep Sorrel and Indian Rhubarb Root. Other formulations contain additional herbs: blessed thistle, kelp, red clover and watercress, and there have been disagreements about which formula is actually the authentic one.

A report by the esteemed cancer researcher, Ralph W. Moss, Ph.D. discussed the effectiveness of the four primary herbs in Essiac tea. The herbs were tested in several different studies, some of which showed positive evidence of antitumor activity and some did not. In a paper written in 1993, Dr. Moss said the recipe for Essiac could be brewed at home for a cost of only about four-cents per day. He commented it was no wonder Essiac was becoming more popular when the hospital bill for a bone marrow transplant was in the neighborhood of $150,000.

Sheila Snow, the author of “Essiac The Secrets of Rene Caisse’s Herbal Pharmacy” reported that Essiac tea looks a bit like apple cider, its aroma is earthy and mild, and its flavor is somewhat like dry wood. She said one ounce of Essiac should be taken mixed with two ounces of hot water. It should be taken on an empty stomach, two to three hours after the evening meal, and nothing else should be eaten or drunk for the next hour.

Not everyone who takes Essiac tea does so for an alternative treatment for cancer. Some say it has a positive effect on overall health, while others claim it assists in the treatment of liver and immune system ailments and diabetes. Officially, it is against current laws to claim that Essiac is a cure, so it is sold as an herbal dietary supplement.

Some reputable retailers of natural and herbal products now have Essiac for sale online.

This article is about the herbal tea, Essiac, and its history. Click for more info or to buy Essiac online.

Essiac is an herbal tea that is used as a cancer treatment. Laws forbid anyone to claim that Essiac is a cure, so the product is marketed as an herbal dietary supplement. The Essiac formula was developed by Rene Caisse, a Registered Nurse in Ontario, Canada. Her name for the formula, Essiac, comes from the backwards spelling of her name, Caisse. According to Ms. Caisse, she was told how to make the formula by a woman who claimed that her cancer had been cured after drinking an herbal tea made by native plants in a recipe that she received from a very old Ojibwa Native Indian medicine man in northern Ontario.

The four herbs that are the main ingredients in Essiac are:

  • Slippery Elm inner bark (Ulmus fulva) – Said to help cleanse toxic waste from the body, helping to restore plasma in the blood and replace lymph to the lymphatic system, as well as improving flora in the digestive system and reducing asthma symptoms.
  • Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella) – This herb, reportedly rich in vitamins and trace minerals, is said to treat internal ulcers and clear up such skin abnormalities as psoriasis and eczema. Literature also states that it cleanses blood and helps the functioning of the intestines, bowels and liver.
  • Burdock Root (Arctium lappa) – It is believed that burdock cleanses the circulatory and lymph systems and contains insulin, which makes the liver, spleen and pancreas stronger
  • Indian Rhubarb Root (Rheum officinale) is the fourth ingredient in Essiac. Said to help remove toxic waste from the liver, this herb is believed to have antibiotic and anti-tumor properties and helps reduce inflammation and fever.

Some of these herbs may be toxic when consumed in high quantities, so care must be taken not to exceed recommendations.

According to Dr. Ralph W. Moss, a renowned advisor on alternative cancer treatments, Essiac has been used to treat thousands of patients, largely in Ms. Caisse’s clinic in Bracebridge, Canada. Dr. Moss also quotes Dr. Charles Brusch, M.D., who was the physician to President John F. Kennedy, as saying “Essiac has merit in the treatment of cancer.”

Several reliable companies that sell natural and herbal products online have Essiac available to order.
